61st Infantry Division (United Kingdom)

The 61st Infantry Division was a British Army infantry division that saw active service during the Second World War. It was initially raised in 1939 as a second-line territorial division, formed from duplicate units of the 48th (South Midland) Infantry Division.

The division was composed of the 182nd, 183rd, and 184th Infantry Brigades, along with supporting artillery, engineers, signals, and medical units.

The 61st spent much of the early war period on home defense duties in the United Kingdom, preparing for a potential German invasion. Training was intensive, and the division underwent numerous exercises to improve its readiness.

In 1944, the 61st Infantry Division landed in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. It participated in the fighting around Caen, playing a role in Operation Epsom and other engagements. The division suffered significant casualties during this period.

Following the Normandy campaign, the 61st continued to fight its way through Northwest Europe, participating in the liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It was involved in the Battle of the Bulge during the winter of 1944-45.

The division continued its advance into Germany in the spring of 1945, and it was involved in the final stages of the war in Europe. Following the German surrender, the 61st Infantry Division was involved in occupation duties.

The 61st Infantry Division was eventually disbanded after the end of the Second World War. Its battle honors reflect its service in Normandy, Northwest Europe, and Germany. While not as widely known as some other British divisions, the 61st played a significant role in the Allied victory.
