Mark (dinghy)

In the context of sailing, particularly dinghy racing, a mark refers to a buoy, inflatable object, or other identifiable floating object used to define the course. These marks are typically positioned strategically to test a sailor's skills in various points of sail, such as upwind, downwind, reaching, and running. Marks are essential for fair competition, ensuring all boats follow the same defined path.

Marks can vary in size and shape, often distinguished by color for easy identification and to signify their role within the race (e.g., a windward mark, leeward mark, gate mark). Race instructions clearly specify the order in which marks must be rounded, and on which side they must be passed (port or starboard). Failure to properly round a mark, or rounding it on the incorrect side, can result in penalties, including disqualification.
