Vlaglied

A vlaglied (plural vlagliedere) is an Afrikaans word literally translating to "flag song". It refers to a type of patriotic song, usually associated with Afrikaner nationalism, that celebrates a particular flag or the symbols it represents. Historically, vlagliedere were prominent during periods of significant political and cultural shifts in South Africa, particularly during the apartheid era. These songs often evoke themes of heritage, identity, and the perceived uniqueness of the Afrikaner people.

While the term primarily refers to songs associated with the South African flag prior to 1994 (the Orange Free State, South African Republic [Transvaal], and Union of South Africa flags, as well as variations thereof), it can also encompass songs about flags of other nations, though this is less common. The use of vlagliedere has become a sensitive topic in post-apartheid South Africa due to the historical context of the flags they celebrate and the association with racial segregation and discrimination. Their performance or display can be interpreted as a statement of political or cultural affiliation.
