Battle of Travnik (1993)

The Battle of Travnik (1993) refers to a series of military engagements that took place in the Travnik municipality of central Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War in June 1993. The main belligerents were the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH), primarily the 312th Brigade based in Travnik, and the Croatian Defence Council (HVO).

The battle stemmed from escalating tensions between the Bosniak and Croat populations and their respective military forces in the region. These tensions were part of a larger conflict between the ARBiH and the HVO that erupted in central Bosnia following a period of uneasy alliance against Bosnian Serb forces.

Fighting in Travnik began in June 1993 after several incidents increased tensions, including disputes over control of territory and resources. The HVO attempted to seize control of key areas within the town and surrounding villages, while the ARBiH responded to defend the territory under its control and to prevent the HVO from gaining a strategic advantage.

The clashes involved infantry fighting, artillery exchanges, and control of strategic points, including roads and hills surrounding Travnik. The ARBiH ultimately managed to secure control of Travnik and the surrounding areas, forcing the HVO to retreat.

The Battle of Travnik (1993) resulted in casualties on both sides and displacement of civilians. The event contributed to the wider Bosniak-Croat conflict in central Bosnia, further complicating the overall dynamics of the Bosnian War. Following the battle, Travnik remained under the control of the ARBiH.
