Vasili Kuznetsov (decathlete)

Vasili Dmitrievich Kuznetsov (Russian: Василий Дмитриевич Кузнецов, 7 February 1932 – 6 August 2001) was a Soviet decathlete who competed internationally during the 1950s and 1960s. He is considered one of the pioneers of Soviet athletics and one of the greatest decathletes of his era.

Kuznetsov won two Olympic medals: bronze at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and bronze at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He also won two gold medals at the European Championships: in 1954 in Bern and in 1958 in Stockholm.

Kuznetsov set two world records in the decathlon: 7,989 points in 1955 and 8,013 points in 1958. He was known for his all-around ability, excelling in multiple disciplines of the decathlon. He was particularly strong in the throwing events.

After retiring from competition, Kuznetsov became a coach and administrator in Soviet athletics. He contributed significantly to the development of the sport in the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Order of Lenin for his accomplishments.
