Cacyreus

Cacyreus is a genus of butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, commonly known as the blue butterflies. It is most notable for containing the species Cacyreus marshalli, the Geranium Bronze or Ivy Brown Butterfly.

The genus is native to Africa and the Middle East. The Geranium Bronze, however, has spread invasively to Europe, South America, and other regions, becoming a significant pest of Geranium and Pelargonium species.

Characteristics:

Butterflies of the Cacyreus genus are typically small with a wingspan of around 20-30mm. They are often characterized by shades of brown, grey, and blue in their wing patterns. The underside of the wings usually features intricate patterns of dots and lines, providing camouflage.

Species:

The Cacyreus genus contains several species, including:

  • Cacyreus audeoudi
  • Cacyreus dariusalii
  • Cacyreus dicksoni
  • Cacyreus ethiopicus
  • Cacyreus lingeus
  • Cacyreus marshalli (Geranium Bronze)
  • Cacyreus niebuhri
  • Cacyreus tespis
  • Cacyreus virilis

Ecological Impact:

The most significant ecological impact associated with the Cacyreus genus is due to Cacyreus marshalli. As an invasive species, the Geranium Bronze can cause substantial damage to cultivated geraniums and pelargoniums, impacting horticulture, gardening, and the nursery trade. The larvae bore into the stems and feed on the plant tissue, leading to leaf damage, stunted growth, and ultimately, plant death. Efforts to control the Geranium Bronze often involve the use of insecticides or biological control methods.
