Doug Rickard (photographer)

Doug Rickard (born 1968) is an American photographer and artist best known for his project "A New American Picture" (2010). This project, which gained considerable critical acclaim, involved Rickard collecting and curating street views captured by Google Street View cameras in economically depressed and marginalized areas of the United States.

Rickard's work often explores themes of surveillance, social inequality, and the changing American landscape in the digital age. He appropriates existing images, reframing and recontextualizing them to create new narratives and insights into contemporary American life. By using Google Street View, Rickard relinquishes direct photographic agency, instead acting as a curator and editor of existing visual data.

His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Beyond "A New American Picture," Rickard has continued to explore themes of appropriation and surveillance in other projects, examining the evolving relationship between photography, technology, and society.
