Víziváros
Víziváros (literally "Watertown") is a neighborhood in Budapest, Hungary, located in the I. District, on the Buda side of the city. It stretches along the Danube River, north of the Castle District (Várnegyed) and south of Margaret Island (Margit-sziget).
Historically, Víziváros was a distinct settlement outside the city walls, inhabited primarily by fishermen, millers, and other tradespeople reliant on the Danube. Its development was heavily influenced by its proximity to the river and the Castle District. Flooding was a frequent challenge for the area.
Key features of Víziváros include:
- Batthyány tér: A major public square with a market hall and transportation hub, offering panoramic views of the Hungarian Parliament Building across the Danube.
- Saint Anne Church (Szent Anna templom): A notable Baroque church.
- The Main Street (Fő utca): A long, straight street running parallel to the Danube, lined with shops, restaurants, and residential buildings.
- The former White Cross Inn (Fehér Kereszt Fogadó): A historic building now housing apartments.
- Its proximity to the Danube: This makes it a popular area for walks and enjoying views of the river.
Víziváros is a blend of historic buildings, modern amenities, and a vibrant atmosphere. Its strategic location and historical significance contribute to its importance as a residential and commercial area within Budapest. Ongoing development projects are aimed at preserving its historical character while enhancing its appeal to residents and tourists.
