Utersum
Utersum is a North Frisian municipality located on the island of Föhr, in the district of Nordfriesland, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is one of eleven municipalities on the island. Utersum is known for its picturesque thatched-roof houses and its location on the western coast of Föhr, offering views of the Wadden Sea.
The name "Utersum" is derived from the Frisian language, with "Uter" meaning "outer" or "further" and "sum" referring to a settlement or home. This suggests a location situated further out or on the periphery compared to other settlements.
Historically, Utersum's economy was based on agriculture and seafaring. Today, tourism plays a significant role in the local economy, with visitors drawn to the area for its natural beauty, beaches, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. The local language is Fering, a dialect of North Frisian, which is still spoken by some residents.
