Unity Party (South Ossetia)
The Unity Party (Ossetian: Иугонд Парти, Russian: Партия Единства) is a political party in South Ossetia. It was the ruling party in South Ossetia from 2009 until 2014.
The party was founded in 2003 and is generally considered to be pro-Russian. It advocates for the integration of South Ossetia into the Russian Federation.
In the 2009 parliamentary election, the Unity Party won a majority of seats in the South Ossetian parliament, securing 17 out of 34 seats. Anatoly Bibilov served as the speaker of the parliament during this period and was a leading figure within the party.
The party's influence declined in subsequent years. In the 2014 parliamentary election, the Unity Party lost its majority, winning only 5 seats. As a result, a coalition government was formed without the Unity Party as the dominant power.
The Unity Party continues to be active in South Ossetian politics, although its electoral performance has diminished since its peak in 2009. It remains a proponent of closer ties with Russia.
