Eclipse (Yngwie Malmsteen album)
Eclipse is the fifth studio album by Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, released in 1990. It marked a shift in Malmsteen's sound, incorporating more blues and progressive rock influences compared to his earlier neoclassical metal style.
The album features a different lineup from Malmsteen's previous works, with Göran Edman on vocals, Mats Olausson on keyboards, Michael von Knorring on drums, and Svante Henryson on cello. While retaining Malmsteen's signature shredding guitar work, the songs on Eclipse explored a wider range of musical textures and arrangements.
Several tracks from Eclipse, such as "Bedroom Eyes" and "Making Love," received significant airplay and helped solidify Malmsteen's presence in the hard rock and metal scene. The album reached the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and was generally well-received by critics, who praised Malmsteen's continued virtuosity and the album's improved songwriting. However, some fans missed the purely neoclassical elements of his earlier albums.
Eclipse is considered a transitional album in Yngwie Malmsteen's discography, showcasing his willingness to experiment with different musical styles while maintaining his core guitar-playing identity. The album's blend of hard rock, blues, and progressive influences distinguishes it from his more overtly neoclassical works.
