Sligo Borough (UK Parliament constituency)
Sligo Borough was a parliamentary constituency in Ireland, returning one Member of Parliament (MP) to the British House of Commons. It existed from 1613 to 1801.
History
The constituency was a borough constituency, representing the town of Sligo. It was enfranchised in 1613 and continued to return a single MP until its abolition under the Act of Union 1800, which came into effect on 1 January 1801. Following the Union, Sligo Borough was incorporated into the new Sligo county constituency.
Elections
Elections were often contested, with local families and political factions vying for control of the seat. Due to the limited franchise, the electorate was typically small, making the constituency susceptible to influence and patronage.
