The Cobbler (2014 film)
The Cobbler is a 2014 American fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Thomas McCarthy and written by McCarthy and Paul Sado. The film stars Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Steve Buscemi, Method Man, and Ellen Barkin.
The film follows Max Simkin (Adam Sandler), a fourth-generation cobbler living and working in his family's shoe repair shop in New York City. Disillusioned with his mundane life, Max discovers an old family heirloom – a sewing machine that allows him to literally step into the lives of his customers by wearing their shoes.
Initially, Max uses this newfound ability for personal gain and escapism. However, as he experiences life from different perspectives and becomes entangled in the lives of his customers, he begins to learn valuable lessons about empathy, responsibility, and the importance of community.
The film received generally negative reviews upon release, with critics often citing its uneven tone, underdeveloped plot, and Sandler's performance. Despite the criticism, some praised the film's underlying themes of self-discovery and the importance of human connection. The film was a box office disappointment.
