FMC XR311

The FMC XR311 was an experimental high-mobility, off-road vehicle developed by the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its primary purpose was to evaluate the feasibility of a fast, highly maneuverable scout and reconnaissance vehicle for the U.S. Army.

The XR311 featured a lightweight chassis, independent suspension, and a powerful engine, providing exceptional off-road performance. It was designed to be air-transportable, further enhancing its utility in various operational environments.

Although the XR311 demonstrated promising capabilities, it was ultimately not adopted for widespread military service. Factors contributing to this decision included the vehicle's cost, maintenance requirements, and the emergence of other competing vehicle designs. Despite its lack of mass production, the XR311 influenced the development of future high-mobility vehicles, including the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), more commonly known as the Humvee. The XR311 is often considered a technological precursor to the HMMWV, showcasing many of the same design principles and performance characteristics.
