Goose Island (Tasmania)
Goose Island is a small, uninhabited island located in Bass Strait, off the north coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is part of the Furneaux Group of islands.
The island is primarily known as a significant breeding site for seabirds, particularly short-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds). Due to its importance for these birds, it is designated as part of the Goose Island Important Bird Area (IBA), identified as such by BirdLife International. The IBA encompasses the entire island and the surrounding waters considered important foraging grounds for the breeding seabirds.
The island's topography is generally low-lying and rocky, with limited vegetation. Its isolation and lack of human disturbance have contributed to its suitability as a refuge for wildlife.
While it is uninhabited and not generally accessible to the public, Goose Island plays a vital role in the conservation of seabird populations in the Bass Strait region. Scientific research and monitoring are occasionally conducted on the island to study and protect these species.
