Postolice

Postolice, also known by the Czech term podstolek (plural podstolky), is a traditional type of Czech furniture, specifically a small, low table or stand. Its primary function was to sit beneath a larger table (the stůl) to hold items such as sewing baskets, books, or other household objects. The postolice served to keep these items readily accessible but out of the way, maximizing space and maintaining a tidy appearance in the room.

Postolice are often crafted from wood, although other materials could have been used depending on the era and the affluence of the household. They are generally characterized by their simple construction, typically consisting of a flat top supported by four legs. Ornamentation varied, with some examples being plain and functional, while others featured carving or decorative paintwork. The height of a postolice is typically low, designed to fit comfortably under the main table without interfering with seating or legroom.

Historically, postolice were common in Czech homes, particularly in rural areas. They represent a practical and space-saving solution to storage needs within a limited living space. While less prevalent in modern households, antique postolice are sometimes sought after as decorative or collectible items, representing a tangible link to Czech domestic history.
