USS Windsor (APA-55)
USS Windsor (APA-55) was a Bayfield-class attack transport that served with the US Navy during World War II. She was named after the town of Windsor, Connecticut.
Windsor was launched on 27 November 1942 by the Western Pipe and Steel Company in San Francisco, California, under a Maritime Commission contract. She was acquired by the Navy and commissioned on 11 September 1943, with Commander Joseph M. Carson, USNR, in command.
During World War II, Windsor participated in several major amphibious operations in the Pacific Theater. These included the invasion of Saipan in June 1944, the Battle of Leyte in October 1944, and the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945. She transported troops and equipment to the landing zones and provided support to the Marines and soldiers ashore.
Following the end of the war, Windsor participated in Operation Magic Carpet, transporting American troops home from the Pacific. She was decommissioned on 28 February 1946 and struck from the Navy List on 12 April 1946. She was sold for scrapping on 8 January 1947.
Windsor received three battle stars for her World War II service.
