Henry Philpott (bishop)

Henry Philpott (1807-1892) was an English churchman and academic who served as Bishop of Worcester from 1861 until his death.

Philpott was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and educated at St John's College, Cambridge, where he was Senior Wrangler in 1829. He became a Fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and was ordained a priest in 1833. He served as Master of St Catharine's College from 1845 to 1861.

During his time at Cambridge, Philpott was also Chaplain to Prince Albert and Archdeacon of Chester.

In 1861, he was nominated as Bishop of Worcester by Lord Palmerston, and consecrated in Westminster Abbey. As Bishop of Worcester, he oversaw the administration of the diocese and participated in debates on matters of church policy. He was known for his evangelical theological views. He was also involved in the establishment of new churches and schools within the diocese.

Philpott held the See of Worcester for over thirty years. He died in Hartlebury Castle, the bishop's palace, in 1892.
