Transa (compilation album)
Transa is a compilation album by Brazilian singer and composer Caetano Veloso, released in 1972. The album documents Veloso's experience in exile in London during Brazil's military dictatorship. It is considered a landmark album in Veloso's career and in Brazilian popular music (Música Popular Brasileira - MPB).
The album blends various musical styles, including Brazilian genres like samba and bossa nova, with rock and avant-garde influences. It features a raw and experimental sound, reflecting Veloso's feelings of displacement and alienation. The lyrics are often politically charged and deal with themes of identity, exile, and the socio-political situation in Brazil.
Key tracks include "You Don't Know Me," "Nine Out of Ten," and "Triste Bahia." Transa is celebrated for its innovative arrangements, introspective lyrics, and its influence on subsequent generations of Brazilian musicians. Its significance lies not only in its musical merit but also in its historical context, representing a period of political repression and artistic resistance. The album is often cited as one of the greatest Brazilian albums of all time.
