Joy Johnson (runner)

Joy Johnson (1914 – 2013) was a British veteran marathon runner who became a beloved figure in the UK running community. Known for her distinctive purple running outfits and her cheerful demeanor, she began running marathons at the age of 50 after taking up jogging to cope with the death of her husband.

Johnson completed over 25 marathons, including 13 London Marathons. She continued to run the London Marathon well into her 80s, becoming the oldest woman to finish the race on several occasions. Her participation was celebrated not just for her impressive athletic achievement at an advanced age, but also for her inspirational spirit and dedication to the sport.
