Alf Lambe
Alf Lambe (1932-1987) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and a member of the Legion of Mary. He is best known for his missionary work in South America, particularly in Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay.
Lambe joined the Legion of Mary in 1953 and served in various roles within the organization in Ireland. In 1959, he was sent to Bogotá, Colombia as a Legion of Mary envoy. He quickly became fluent in Spanish and dedicated himself to evangelization and social work among the poor and marginalized.
His missionary work involved organizing and promoting the Legion of Mary throughout South America. He established hundreds of new Legion of Mary groups (praesidia) and encouraged active participation in community development and spiritual growth. His efforts significantly expanded the Legion of Mary's presence and influence in the region.
Lambe was known for his intense faith, personal charisma, and tireless dedication to his mission. He faced numerous challenges, including poverty, political instability, and health problems. Despite these difficulties, he remained committed to serving the poor and spreading the Gospel.
He died in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1987, at the age of 54. His cause for canonization has been opened by the Catholic Church, and he is now known as a Servant of God. Many consider him a model of missionary zeal and dedication to the poor. His legacy continues to inspire Legionaries throughout the world.
