USS Luzon (PG-47)

The USS Luzon (PG-47) was a United States Navy gunboat that served primarily in the Asiatic Fleet before and during World War II. Built at the Kiangnan Dock and Engineering Works in Shanghai, China, and commissioned in 1928, she was one of the "river gunboats" designed for operations on the Yangtze River and other inland waterways of China. These vessels were specifically designed with a shallow draft to navigate the challenging and often shallow rivers, allowing the U.S. Navy to protect American interests and citizens during a period of considerable political instability and conflict.

The Luzon performed routine patrols and participated in various diplomatic and security missions along the Yangtze. With the rise of Japanese aggression in the 1930s, her role became increasingly vital in safeguarding American lives and property from the escalating violence.

Following the outbreak of World War II, the Luzon was initially stationed in the Philippines. As Japanese forces advanced, she participated in the defense of the islands and provided support to retreating forces. In May 1942, facing overwhelming odds and the threat of capture, the USS Luzon was scuttled in Mariveles Bay, Philippines, to prevent her from falling into enemy hands.
