Iznogoud

Iznogoud is a fictional character, created by French comics writer René Goscinny and artist Jean Tabary. He is the Grand Vizier of Baghdad whose sole ambition is to depose the Caliph, Haroun El Poussah (Haroun El Plassid in English translations), and take his place. His catchphrase is "I want to be Caliph instead of the Caliph!"

The character first appeared in the French comic strip Les aventures du Calife Haroun el Poussah in 1962. In 1969, the comic strip was renamed Iznogoud to reflect the growing popularity of the character. The series is a humorous take on the political machinations and power struggles common in many historical settings, albeit with a distinctly absurd and fantastical twist.

Iznogoud is depicted as a small, scheming man, constantly devising elaborate and often ridiculous plots to overthrow the well-meaning but simple-minded Caliph. His plans invariably fail, often due to his own arrogance, incompetence, or the interference of his loyal but equally dim-witted assistant, Wa'at Al Ahfeh (Dilat Larath in English translations).

The humor of the series lies in the contrast between Iznogoud's grand ambitions and his consistent failures. His plots often involve magical artifacts, bizarre inventions, or complex traps, which backfire in unexpected and humorous ways. While technically the villain of the series, Iznogoud's ineptitude makes him a comical and ultimately sympathetic figure.

The comic has been translated into numerous languages and adapted into an animated series and a live-action film. Iznogoud has become a well-known figure in popular culture, representing the archetype of the ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful schemer.
