The Wonder (film)
The Wonder is a 2022 psychological period drama film directed by Sebastián Lelio. It is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The film stars Florence Pugh as Lib Wright, an English nurse who is called to a small Irish village in the 1860s to observe Anna O'Donnell, a young girl who has supposedly survived for months without eating.
The story follows Lib's investigation into Anna's purported miracle, facing skepticism from the local community and battling her own personal demons. As Lib spends time with Anna, she questions the religious fervor surrounding the girl and investigates the motives of Anna's devout family and the wider village. The film explores themes of faith, science, trauma, and the power of storytelling.
The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2022 and was released on Netflix in November 2022. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for Pugh's performance, Lelio's direction, and the film's atmospheric tone and exploration of complex themes.
