The Seekers (rapturists)
The Seekers, often referred to as rapturists, are adherents to a specific eschatological viewpoint primarily found within some branches of Protestant Christianity, particularly dispensational premillennialism. This viewpoint centers around the belief in a future event known as the Rapture, in which all living Christians, along with resurrected believers, will be taken ("caught up") into Heaven to meet Jesus Christ.
Key tenets of The Seekers' beliefs include:
- Premillennialism: The belief that Jesus Christ will return to Earth before a literal thousand-year reign (the Millennium) of peace.
- Dispensationalism: The understanding that God has interacted with humanity in distinct periods (dispensations), each marked by a different test of obedience. The Rapture is seen as a key event within the current dispensation.
- The Rapture: This is the core belief that distinguishes The Seekers. They believe the Rapture will occur prior to a period of tribulation on Earth, providing a means of escape for believers. There are varying views among The Seekers regarding the timing of the Rapture relative to the tribulation (pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, post-tribulation, and pre-wrath Rapture theories).
- The Great Tribulation: A period of widespread suffering and judgment on Earth, following the Rapture. The Seekers believe this will be a time of unparalleled hardship.
- The Second Coming: Following the Tribulation, Jesus Christ will return visibly to Earth to defeat the Antichrist, establish his millennial kingdom, and judge the nations.
It is important to note that the term "The Seekers" is not a formal designation or denomination. It is used here to collectively refer to individuals and groups who prioritize and emphasize the Rapture within their theological framework. The specific beliefs and interpretations regarding the timing and nature of the Rapture can vary significantly among different groups and individuals who hold this belief. Furthermore, the term may sometimes be used to differentiate these believers from Christians who do not hold a Rapture-centric view of eschatology.
