Tharakan (Hindu caste)
The Tharakan are a Hindu caste traditionally found in the Malabar region of Kerala, India. Historically, they were primarily involved in trade, particularly in pepper and other spices. The name "Tharakan" is believed to be derived from the word "Tharaku," referring to the process of weighing goods, reflecting their mercantile activities. They held a significant position in the agrarian and commercial economy of the region. The Tharakan community typically followed the matrilineal system of inheritance (Marumakkathayam), a common practice among many communities in Kerala. Over time, many members of the Tharakan community have diversified into various professions beyond trade and agriculture. Social reform movements in the 20th century significantly impacted the community, leading to changes in traditional customs and practices.
