T5 (satellite)
T5 is a Norwegian technology demonstration satellite. It's part of the NORSAT series and is focused on testing new communication and navigation technologies in a polar orbit. T5's primary mission objective is to test a new generation of AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver and a navigation payload.
Specifically, T5 aimed to:
- Demonstrate improved AIS reception: AIS is a tracking system used on ships. T5's AIS receiver was designed to be more sensitive and capable of tracking a larger number of ships simultaneously than previous generations. This is particularly important in the Arctic region, where ship traffic is increasing.
- Test a new navigation payload: This payload allows for precise positioning and timing. The data collected helps improve navigation services and potentially contribute to future navigation satellite systems.
- Verify satellite platform performance: T5 also serves as a testbed for various satellite platform components, contributing to the development of future Norwegian space technology.
The mission duration was planned to be several years, allowing for extensive testing and data collection. The data from T5 is used by researchers and industry partners to improve maritime safety, navigation accuracy, and satellite technology.
