Devoll (river)
The Devoll is a river in southern Albania. It is one of the most important rivers in the country, and one of the two that form the Seman River.
Geography:
The Devoll originates in the Devoll region, in the mountains of southeastern Albania, near the Greek border. It flows generally northwest, passing through the municipalities of Devoll, Miras, Progër, Bilisht, Maliq, Moglicë, and eventually merges with the Osum River near Kuçovë to form the Seman River. The Seman then flows into the Adriatic Sea.
Hydroelectric Power:
The Devoll River is a significant source of hydroelectric power for Albania. Several hydroelectric power plants have been constructed along its course, contributing significantly to the country's energy production. These plants include the Banja Hydropower Plant and the Moglicë Hydropower Plant, both major projects undertaken by Devoll Hydropower, a company owned by Statkraft.
Environmental Concerns:
The construction of hydroelectric dams has raised environmental concerns, including potential impacts on biodiversity, water quality, and sediment transport. Studies and mitigation measures are typically required as part of the dam construction process.
History and Culture:
The Devoll region and the river itself have historical significance, and have been inhabited for centuries. The surrounding areas are known for their agricultural production and traditional Albanian culture. The name "Devoll" may be related to ancient regional names.
