Union Station (Houston)

Union Station in Houston, Texas, is a historic train station located in the city's downtown area. It originally served as a major passenger rail terminal, connecting Houston to various destinations across the United States. The station was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architect Alfred C. Bossom and officially opened in 1911.

Union Station served as the primary rail hub for Houston for several decades, handling traffic from multiple railroad companies, including Southern Pacific, Missouri Pacific, and others. The building features a grand waiting hall, ornate detailing, and a distinctive arched facade.

Passenger rail service declined in the mid-20th century, leading to a reduction in train traffic through Union Station. The station eventually ceased operations as a passenger terminal in 1974.

In the 21st century, Union Station was renovated and repurposed. It now serves as the entrance to Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team. The station's historic features have been preserved, and the grand hall is used as an event space. Although no longer an active train station in the traditional sense, Union Station remains a prominent landmark and a symbol of Houston's transportation history.
