Ger (Hasidic dynasty)
Ger (Yiddish: גער), also known as Gerrer Hasidism, is one of the largest Hasidic dynasties in the world, originating in the town of Góra Kalwaria (Yiddish: Ger), Poland. It was founded by Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter (1799–1866), known as the Chiddushei HaRim, after he became the rebbe following the death of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk.
Ger differs from other Hasidic groups in its strict adherence to Halakha (Jewish law) and its centralized leadership. The dynasty emphasizes meticulous observance of Jewish laws, intensive Torah study, and a highly structured community life.
History:
The Chiddushei HaRim established Ger as a major center of Hasidism, attracting thousands of followers. His successors, including Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter (the Sfas Emes), Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter (the Imrei Emes), and Rabbi Yisrael Alter (the Beis Yisrael), further solidified the dynasty's prominence.
During the Holocaust, the Ger community suffered immense losses, with much of its leadership and following decimated. Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter managed to escape to Palestine (then Mandatory Palestine), where he re-established the dynasty.
After Rabbi Avraham Mordechai's death, his son, Rabbi Yisrael Alter, became the rebbe. He worked tirelessly to rebuild the Ger community and its institutions. He was succeeded by his brother, Rabbi Simcha Bunim Alter (the Lev Simcha), and then by his nephew, Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, the current rebbe.
Beliefs and Practices:
Ger Hasidism is characterized by:
- Emphasis on Halakha: Strict adherence to Jewish law is a cornerstone of Ger philosophy.
- Centralized Leadership: The rebbe holds significant authority and is considered the ultimate guide for the community.
- Torah Study: Intensive and continuous Torah study is highly valued.
- Structured Community Life: Ger communities are tightly knit and emphasize mutual support and adherence to community norms.
- Unique Melodies and Niggunim: Ger has its own distinctive style of melodies and niggunim (wordless melodies) that are sung during prayer and other occasions.
- Active Political Involvement: Ger has historically been actively involved in Israeli politics, primarily through the Agudat Yisrael party.
Present Day:
Today, Ger is one of the largest and most influential Hasidic dynasties, with communities in Israel, the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world. The central institutions of Ger are located in Jerusalem, where the rebbe resides. The dynasty continues to grow and adapt to modern challenges while maintaining its commitment to its traditional values and beliefs.
