Dave King (ice hockey)
Dave King (born December 22, 1947) is a Canadian former ice hockey coach and player. He is highly regarded for his contributions to the development of hockey both in Canada and internationally.
King's coaching career spanned several decades and included significant roles at the university, professional, and international levels. He is perhaps best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Canadian national men's ice hockey team from 1983 to 1992. During this period, he guided Canada to numerous medals at major international tournaments, including a silver medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, and bronze medals at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, and the 1986 World Championships.
Prior to coaching the national team, King coached at the University of Saskatchewan. Following his time with Team Canada, he coached in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames (1992-1995) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (2000-2003). He also coached professionally in Europe, including stints in Germany and Russia.
King is recognized for his innovative coaching techniques and his emphasis on player development. He has authored several books on hockey coaching and has been a sought-after speaker and consultant within the hockey community. He is considered a pioneer in bringing European coaching methods to North America and North American coaching methods to Europe.
