Gerard Barrett (director)

Gerard Barrett is an Irish film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is known for his work exploring themes of social issues, mental health, and rural life in Ireland.

Barrett gained recognition for his debut feature film, Pilgrim Hill (2013), which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. The film portrays the isolated life of an Irish farmer and the challenges he faces. It was critically acclaimed and won numerous awards, including the Galway Film Fleadh's Best Irish Feature award.

Following Pilgrim Hill, Barrett directed Glassland (2014), starring Jack Reynor and Toni Collette. This film explores the impact of alcoholism on a young man and his family. Glassland also garnered critical acclaim and earned several awards, including the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival for Reynor.

Barrett also directed the American drama Brain on Fire (2016), based on the memoir of the same name by Susannah Cahalan. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz and chronicles Cahalan's struggle with a rare autoimmune disease affecting the brain.
