Glenlivet

Glenlivet is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky produced at the Glenlivet distillery in Banffshire, Scotland. It is one of the best-selling single malt whiskies in the world and is often considered a benchmark for the Speyside style.

History:

The Glenlivet distillery was founded in 1824 by George Smith, operating initially as an illicit still before obtaining a license. It was one of the first licensed distilleries in the parish of Glenlivet, which at the time was rife with illegal whisky production. George Smith’s persistence in legalizing his operation earned him both respect and resentment within the community. The distillery's early reputation for quality led many other distilleries in the region to incorporate "Glenlivet" into their names, creating confusion. Eventually, in 1884, the name "The Glenlivet" was legally protected for George and J.G. Smith, cementing its distinctive brand identity.

Production:

Glenlivet whisky is produced using malted barley, water from Josie's Well, and distillation in copper pot stills. The specific shape of the stills is a key factor in the whisky's flavour profile. The spirit is then matured primarily in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, which contribute to the whisky's characteristics. The maturation process is crucial, with the type of oak and the length of time spent in the cask significantly impacting the final flavour.

Flavour Profile:

Glenlivet whiskies are typically characterized by their smooth, fruity, and floral notes. Common flavour descriptors include green apple, pear, vanilla, honey, and citrus. The use of ex-bourbon casks imparts vanilla and coconut notes, while ex-sherry casks contribute dried fruit and spice characteristics.

Core Range:

The Glenlivet core range typically includes the 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old, and Nadurra expressions. These represent a range of ages and cask finishes, showcasing the versatility of the Glenlivet style. The distillery also releases limited editions and single cask bottlings.

Awards and Recognition:

Glenlivet has received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history, solidifying its reputation as a high-quality single malt whisky.
