French ship Sphinx (1776)
The Sphinx was a 64-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, launched in 1776. She was designed by Joseph-Marie-Rose Pellerin and constructed at Brest.
Sphinx participated actively in the American Revolutionary War, serving under Admiral d'Estaing. Notably, she was involved in the Battle of Grenada in 1779.
Later in her career, Sphinx was part of the fleet commanded by Admiral de Grasse during the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781, a crucial engagement that secured French naval dominance and ultimately contributed to the American victory at Yorktown.
The ship continued to serve in the French Navy until she was eventually broken up in 1793. Her design was influential and served as the basis for later French ships.
