George Lyon (Scottish politician)

George Lyon (born 16 July 1956) is a Scottish Liberal Democrat politician and farmer.

He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Scotland from 2009 to 2014. During his time in the European Parliament, Lyon was a prominent member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group and focused primarily on agricultural and rural affairs. He served as Vice-President of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

Prior to his election to the European Parliament, Lyon was involved in local politics and served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Argyll and Bute from 1999 to 2007. During his time in the Scottish Parliament, he served as the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for rural affairs. He lost his seat in the 2007 Scottish Parliament election.

Beyond his political career, Lyon is a working farmer in Argyll. He has been actively involved in farming organizations, including serving as President of the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) from 2003 to 2006. His extensive background in agriculture gave him considerable expertise in related policy areas both within the Scottish Parliament and the European Parliament.
