R boat

An R boat, also sometimes referred to as an "R-boat," typically designates a class of small warship or patrol boat, primarily used during World War II by the German Kriegsmarine. The "R" stands for Räumboot, which translates to "minesweeper boat" or "clearing boat" in English.

These vessels were designed primarily for coastal minesweeping duties, operating in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and other coastal areas under German control. They also served in other roles, including escorting convoys, patrolling waterways, and acting as anti-submarine escorts.

R boats were generally smaller than destroyers and larger than motor torpedo boats, making them versatile vessels suitable for a range of tasks in shallow or confined waters. They were typically equipped with anti-aircraft guns for defense against aerial attacks and could be fitted with depth charges for anti-submarine warfare. Some variations also carried mine-laying equipment.

Various classes and subtypes of R boats were built during the war, with differing specifications regarding displacement, armament, and propulsion. They played a significant role in maintaining German naval operations within their coastal waters.

After World War II, some surviving R boats were reassigned to other navies, including those of Allied nations, to assist in post-war minesweeping operations.
