Kelham

Kelham is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located approximately two miles west of Newark-on-Trent.

History:

The village has a long history, dating back to at least the Roman period. Evidence suggests Roman settlement in the area. Kelham is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Kellun". Throughout much of its history, Kelham has been an agricultural community.

Kelham Hall:

Kelham is best known for Kelham Hall, a Victorian Gothic country house that has served various purposes over the centuries. Originally built in the 13th century, the current hall dates from the 19th century and was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It served as a theological college for the Society of the Sacred Mission from 1903 to 1975. During World War I, it was used as a military hospital. More recently, it has been used as a conference and wedding venue, and has been subject to various redevelopment plans. The Hall and grounds are of significant architectural and historical interest.

Community:

Kelham has a village hall, a primary school (Kelham Church of England Primary School), and a church (St Wilfrid's Church). The River Trent flows nearby. The population of Kelham parish is relatively small, contributing to its village character.
