Circles (film)
Circles (Serbian: Krugovi) is a 2013 Serbian anti-war drama film directed by Srdan Golubović. It explores the repercussions of a heroic act during the Bosnian War. The film follows the lives of several individuals affected by the courageous decision of Marko, a Serbian soldier who defends a Muslim civilian from being murdered by his comrades.
The narrative unfolds across different time periods, showing how the events of the war continue to resonate and shape the choices and destinies of those involved, including Marko's best friend, his commanding officer, and the Muslim man he saved. Each character grapples with moral dilemmas, forgiveness, and the enduring legacy of violence.
Circles was critically acclaimed for its powerful storytelling, compelling performances, and its nuanced examination of war's lasting psychological and emotional scars. It was selected as the Serbian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. The film won numerous awards at international film festivals, including the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
