Stockholm (2018 film)
Stockholm is a 2018 crime film written and directed by Robert Budreau. It is based on the 1973 Norrmalmstorg robbery and hostage crisis in Stockholm, Sweden, which gave rise to the term "Stockholm syndrome."
The film stars Ethan Hawke as Kaj Hansson, a man who robs a bank and takes several hostages. Noomi Rapace plays Bianca Lind, a bank employee who develops a complex relationship with her captor. Mark Strong portrays Gunnar Sorensson, the police officer leading the negotiation efforts.
Stockholm recounts the events of the robbery and hostage situation, depicting the escalating tension and the changing dynamics between the hostages and Kaj. It explores how the hostages begin to sympathize with their captor, eventually trusting him more than the authorities. The film attempts to portray the psychological mechanisms that led to the development of Stockholm syndrome.
The film is a Canadian-American co-production. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018.
