The Ministry of Education (Portuguese: Ministério da Educação, abbreviated as ME) is the Portuguese government ministry responsible for the organization, management, evaluation, and promotion of education at all levels, with the exception of higher education which falls under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. Its responsibilities encompass pre-school, primary, secondary, and vocational education. The Ministry formulates national education policies, oversees the curriculum, manages the allocation of resources to schools, and is responsible for the recruitment and training of teachers. Furthermore, it ensures the enforcement of educational laws and regulations throughout the Portuguese territory. The headquarters of the Ministry of Education are located in Lisbon. The current Minister of Education is appointed by the Prime Minister of Portugal. The Ministry works in conjunction with other government departments to improve educational outcomes and to promote lifelong learning for all citizens.
