Andy González (musician)

Andy González (January 1, 1951 – April 9, 2020) was an American jazz bassist and Latin jazz musician of Puerto Rican descent. He was a highly regarded and influential figure in the New York City Latin music scene for over five decades.

González was born in the Bronx, New York City. He and his brother, Jerry González, a trumpeter and percussionist, were central figures in the development of Latin jazz in the 1970s and beyond. He was a member of several significant ensembles, including Eddie Palmieri's band, Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorkino, and Conjunto Libre.

He was renowned for his profound knowledge of Afro-Cuban rhythms and his virtuosic bass playing. He was not only a performer but also a dedicated researcher and educator, deeply committed to preserving and promoting the traditions of Latin music. His playing style was characterized by its deep groove, rhythmic complexity, and melodic inventiveness.

González contributed to numerous recordings as a sideman and leader. He and his brother Jerry often collaborated, leading their own group, The Fort Apache Band, which became a seminal force in the Latin jazz world. He also worked with a wide range of artists from various genres, showcasing his versatility and musical expertise. He was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) National Heritage Fellowship in 2019, recognizing his significant contributions to American folk and traditional arts. His passing in 2020 was mourned by the Latin music community as a major loss.
