Dennis Gibson (American football)

Dennis Gibson (born November 15, 1964) is a former professional American football player who played linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He is best known for his game-saving play in Super Bowl XXVI as a member of the Washington Redskins.

Gibson played college football at Iowa State University where he earned All-Big Eight honors. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1987 NFL Draft but was cut before the season. He then joined the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football (WLAF) in 1991.

In 1991, Gibson signed with the Washington Redskins. He played three seasons for the Redskins (1991-1993). It was with Washington where he had the most significant impact. In Super Bowl XXVI against the Buffalo Bills, with the Redskins leading 37-24 late in the fourth quarter, Gibson tackled Bills running back Thurman Thomas inches short of the goal line on fourth down, preserving the Redskins' lead and effectively sealing the victory. This play, often referred to as "The Tackle," is considered one of the most memorable defensive plays in Super Bowl history.

After his NFL career, Gibson retired from professional football.
