Rio Blanco (ship)

The Rio Blanco was a Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (RMSPC) passenger and cargo liner built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff in 1914. She served primarily on routes between the United Kingdom and South America. During World War I, she was requisitioned by the British Admiralty and served as an armed merchant cruiser. After the war, she returned to civilian service with RMSPC. She continued in service until the outbreak of World War II, when she was again requisitioned for war service, this time as a troop transport. The Rio Blanco was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-107 on 1 November 1941, off the coast of Scotland, with the loss of 58 lives.
