Crossroads Mall (Waterloo, Iowa)
Crossroads Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located in Waterloo, Iowa. Opened in 1965, it was one of the first enclosed malls in the state. Over the years, it housed a variety of anchor stores including Sears, Younkers, JC Penney, Montgomery Ward, and Target.
The mall experienced a period of decline in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with store closures and reduced foot traffic. Competition from newer retail developments in the area, as well as changing consumer habits, contributed to its struggles.
In 2017, the City of Waterloo purchased the property with the intention of redeveloping the site. Demolition of the mall began in 2018. As of 2023, the site is being redeveloped into a mixed-use area featuring a convention center, hotel, and other commercial and residential spaces. The redevelopment project aims to revitalize the area and create a new destination for the city. The former Sears building remains standing and is being repurposed.
