Poultney is a town located in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. Situated along the New York state border, it lies approximately 60 miles southwest of the state capital, Montpelier. The town is part of the Rutland micropolitan statistical area.

Historically, Poultney was chartered on September 21, 1761, as one of the New Hampshire Grants. Early settlers arrived in the 1770s, establishing farming communities and utilizing the area's water power for mills. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century, driven by industries such as slate quarrying and agriculture, particularly dairy farming.

Green Mountain College was located in Poultney until its closure in 2019. The college played a significant role in the town's economy and culture for over 180 years.
