Basketball Arena (London)
The Basketball Arena was a temporary indoor arena constructed in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London, it hosted the basketball preliminary rounds and quarter-finals, as well as the wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby events. At the time of its construction, it was one of the largest temporary venues ever built for an Olympic Games.
Designed by WilkinsonEyre Architects, the arena had a capacity of 12,000 spectators during the Olympics and Paralympics. The arena's striking appearance was characterized by its lightweight steel and recyclable PVC membrane cladding, which gave it a distinctive white, pillow-like texture.
Following the conclusion of the 2012 Games, the Basketball Arena was dismantled. The components were designed for reuse or recycling, adhering to the sustainability principles of the London Olympics. While the arena itself no longer exists on the Olympic Park site, its legacy remains as a successful example of temporary venue design and its contribution to the sporting events held during the 2012 Games.
