48th Infantry Division (1st Formation) (People's Republic of China)
The 48th Infantry Division (1st Formation) was a military formation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of the People's Republic of China. It was originally formed in February 1949 under the designation of the 48th Division of the 16th Corps. Its main components were drawn from units of the Bohai Military Region.
The division participated in various campaigns and military operations in the early years of the People's Republic, including operations in the south of China. It was involved in suppressing local resistance and consolidating Communist control in newly liberated areas.
The 48th Infantry Division consisted of three regiments: the 142nd Regiment, the 143rd Regiment, and the 144th Regiment. It also included supporting arms and services such as artillery, anti-aircraft, and engineering units.
The division likely underwent reorganization and restructuring throughout its service history, reflecting the evolving doctrines and modernization efforts of the PLA. Specific details regarding its later deployments and eventual disbandment (if applicable) require further research, as publicly available information is limited. Historical records indicate that many early PLA divisions were either reorganized, re-designated, or disbanded as the PLA modernized and reduced its overall size.
