Laid Back (album)

Laid Back is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Gregg Allman, released in October 1973 by Capricorn Records. It marked Allman's first solo venture, undertaken during a period of relative inactivity for The Allman Brothers Band.

The album is a notable departure from the Southern rock sound commonly associated with The Allman Brothers Band, exploring a more introspective and blues-influenced style. Laid Back incorporates elements of soul, gospel, and country, showcasing Allman's versatility as a vocalist and musician.

Key tracks on the album include "Midnight Rider" (a re-recording of The Allman Brothers Band classic, this time with a slower, more soulful arrangement), "Queen of My Dreams," and "Please Call Home." The album also features covers of classic blues and gospel songs, such as "These Days" (written by Jackson Browne) and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

Laid Back was produced by Johnny Sandlin, who had previously worked with The Allman Brothers Band. The album features contributions from several prominent musicians, including Chuck Leavell on piano and organ, and members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

While not as commercially successful as some of The Allman Brothers Band's albums, Laid Back was well-received by critics and is considered a classic of the Southern rock and Americana genres. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album remains a significant part of Gregg Allman's legacy, demonstrating his artistic range and contributing to his reputation as one of the most influential figures in Southern rock history.
