Stanley Lewis (sculptor)

Stanley Lewis (born 1941) is an American sculptor and educator, known for his complex, highly detailed, and often precarious-looking constructions, usually built from wood, found objects, and paint. His work is characterized by its emphasis on process and observation, revealing a deep engagement with the physicality of materials and the challenges of representing three-dimensional space in two dimensions.

Lewis studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and Yale University. He has taught at numerous institutions including Bowdoin College and American University.

His sculptures are often described as intensely personal and expressive, reflecting a sustained investigation into form, color, and the relationship between art and life. His process often involves building, dismantling, and rebuilding his sculptures, resulting in works that bear the marks of their own creation.
