Earthling (film)
Earthling is a 2005 American documentary film about humanity's use of animals. Written, directed, and co-produced by Shaun Monson, and narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, the film presents graphic footage obtained through the use of hidden cameras documenting the day-to-day practices of factory farms, puppy mills, and various industries that profit from the use of animals. The film is divided into five sections: pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research.
Earthling aims to expose what it alleges are the inhumane and unethical treatment of animals in these industries, arguing that speciesism, a prejudice or bias in favor of one's own species and against others, underpins this treatment. The film contains graphic and disturbing content and is known for its explicit depiction of animal suffering.
The film gained significant attention within the animal rights movement and has been credited with influencing viewers to adopt vegan lifestyles. It has been screened at numerous film festivals and has won several awards for its documentary content and advocacy.
